Here’s the first in a series of real treats: Real video journalist Dan Petty taking a look back at the 2009 Underground Music Showcase (as opposed to a yokel with a flip phone like me).
Petty, an video intern at The Denver Post this summer, focuses on the penultimate performance by Denver’s Everything Absent Or Distorted, including interviews with the band. It’s very possible you’ll see tears from EAOD’s John Kuker. Maybe. That would be something different.
Petty also talks to UMS executive director Ricardo Baca about the growth of the UMS, and peeks in on The Wheel. Plus interviews with festivalgoers. All in less than 4 minutes. Dan, we wish you didn’t have to go back to school.

Here’s a shout-out to Tom Murphy of Westword, the most prolific music blogger in Denver. He not only played the 2009 UMS — with the band 900 Ancestors — he covered it, offering a new new entry each day on his sleeper bands of the UMS; those that received 21 points or fewer in our poll of music experts, but were nonetheless among the 200 or so bands that played the UMS.
Among the bands Murphy brings attention to are the Dan Kaufman Superstar Eruption, Slight Harp, Fight Spider With Spider and Missure Mystic. With photos.
We’d also like to thank Tom for helping us compile our most coprehensive ballot yet for the panel to consider — with more than 500 band names considered.
Check out Tom’s musings in two places. Here’s his .
And here’s , led by Dave Herrera. They were most impressed by Danielle Ate the Sandwich. As usual, it’s an extensive and lively write-up from Team Westword.
By the way, if you don’t know Murphy (and, I guess, even if you do), here’s video a clip of him performing at the UMS with 900 Ancestors at the Skylark on Sunday (he’s the guy in the back):
