KEENESBURG, Colo.—Investigators say an arson suspect claims a voice in his head told him to set fire to his Keenesburg apartment to chase the “heebie-jeebies” from under his bed.

Forty-one-year-old Jerry Lee Haffner of Keenesburg was arrested Monday on suspicion of first-degree arson. He’s being held under $100,000 bail.

Court documents say Haffner told Weld County deputies that the voice he heard belonged to an FBI agent named Melissa, and that the agent was “wired” into his head. He also said the “heebie-jeebies” were trying to kill him.

Deputy Kris Haffner, a distant relative of the suspect, rescued another resident of the apartment building from the fire.

No injuries were reported.

Keenesburg is about 20 miles southeast of Greeley and 35 miles northeast of Denver.
