An 8-year-old boy has died after his three-wheeled minibike was hit by a taxi cab.
According to Lakewood police, John Piercell Jr., was driving the minibike in a parking lot Sunday morning at Fourth Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard when he appeared to lose control and headed into the southbound lanes of Sheridan.
A southbound taxi driven by Abera Gebrehana , 30, struck the three-wheeler as it entered traffic, according to investigators.
Piercell died Sunday night at a hospital.
Gebrehana remained at the scene and was interviewed by investigators. Police don’t believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident.
Lakewood police spokesman Steve Davis said there is an ongoing investigation to determine the cause and whether any charges are appropriate.
