Getting your player ready...

The Colorado Rapids waived midfielder Terry Cooke, who led the MLS in assists in 2006.

A week shy of his 33rd birthday, Cooke played sparingly this season, appearing in only 10 of the Rapids’ 18 games and starting only five. He did have a goal and an assist.

He is No. 2 on the all-time Rapids assist list with 34, trailing only Chris Henderson (53). Cooke led the league with 12 assists in 2006 and supplied another 12 last season, third-best in the league.

Once part of the renowned Manchester United development system, where he was a teammate of the young David Beckham, Cooke came to the Rapids in 2005 after playing for Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, Birmingham City and Manchester City in England.

Cooke was waived so the Rapids could sign midfielder Jamie Smith, who has played for Scottish sides Celtic and Aberdeen, as well as Holland’s ADO Den Haag. He has played twice for the Scottish national team.

The Rapids play host to MLS champion Columbus Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
