A fire in Rio Blanco County grew to 250 acres and knocked out power east of Rangley this afternoon.

The so-called Spring Creek fire began on private property about 1:30 p.m. in grass and brush in a canyon on the east fork of the creek, according to the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit.

This evening, the fire had burned up the canyon walls into sagebrush, pinyon, juniper trees and Douglas fir stands on Bureau of Land Management property.

Besides power lines, the fire also is threatening buildings, equipment and lines associated with oil and gas operations in the area.

White River Electric restored power by early evening, according to fire agencies.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
