What, the Sadler’s Alaska Challenge wasn’t tough enough already? The world’s most grueling event for wheelchair and handcycle racers — an eight-stage, 267-mile race along five glaciers from Seward to Hatcher Pass — got even dicier for Sherry Schulz when a black bear crossed her path during a time-trial stage and eyeballed her for 15 or 20 seconds. “You can’t really back up in those handcycles, and I didn’t think I could outrun it,” Schulz told the Anchorage Daily News. “I think he might’ve thought I was meals on wheels.” The Seattle Times/AP file photo
