Travelers passing through Denver International Airport have reaped the benefits of airline competition and the variety of routes in the form of low air fares, according to federal data released Wednesday.
In the first quarter of 2009, domestic air fares out of DIA were at their lowest level — $292 on average — in 14 years of recordkeeping, the federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics said.
For the same period in 2008, the average Denver air fare was $325. Air fares in Denver peaked in 2001 prior to 9-11 at $452.
In comparison, U.S. domestic air fares averaged $315 in the first quarter of 2009, down 5.9 percent from the same period in 2008.
