The weather pattern in August is similar to the rest of the summer, but severe weather decreases significantly.

Toward the end of the month, the daily temperatures will begin to decline. Skies are generally clear between midnight and noon. During the early afternoon hours, showers and thunderstorms develop along the foothills and move eastward across the Denver metro area.

The occurrence of severe weather decreases during August compared with the severe-weather months of June and July. The air mass over the area is as warm as earlier in the summer, however, near the surface, it is usually a bit cooler. This leads to a more stable air mass and less intense thunderstorms.

Tornadoes and large hail become fairly rare, especially after the middle of August. The storms move slowly and are more likely to produce heavy rainfall than large hail.

By late August, the days are shorter. An occasional cold front will slip through the area, chilling the air. There has never been snowfall recorded in Denver in August.
