OMAHA, Neb.—President Barack Obama has nominated former Keith County Attorney Deborah Gilg to become U.S. attorney for Nebraska.

Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., recommended Gilg to replace Joe Stecher, a Republican who was appointed in April 2007 by President George W. Bush.

The 57-year-old Gilg would be Nebraska’s first female U.S. attorney. Gilg served from 1987 to 2002 as Keith County attorney and is in private practice now.

Gilg graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska College of Law.
