In a first, Dexter Fowler did not start for a third consecutive game. Manager Jim Tracy is giving Carlos Gonzalez more at-bats, and Gonzalez singled in the third inning. Tracy would like to pair them eventually, “if we can get similar at-bats from Carlos as we get from Seth (Smith). We would then have two big-time weapons on the bench (in Smith and Garrett Atkins). We are not there yet.”

With August upon us, it’s time to think about possible awards. Todd Helton, who doubled in the fourth, is in line for comeback player of the year, with Tracy a strong candidate for NL manager of the year.
