WESTHAMPTON, N.Y. — The author of the Hollywood novel “What Makes Sammy Run?” and the Oscar-winning screenplay for “On the Waterfront” has died in New York. Budd Schulberg was 95.
His wife, Betsy, said he died Wednesday at his home on Long Island.
Published in 1941, “What Makes Sammy Run?” follows its title character’s shameless adventures as he schmoozes, steals and back stabs his way from office boy to production chief at a Hollywood studio.
“On the Waterfront” starred Marlon Brando in one of his most famous roles. The classic about corruption on the docks was filmed in Hoboken, N.J.
