A man in custody of Denver police committed suicide tonight on the front porch of his home near 44th Street and Yates Avenue.
The man, who has not been identified, had his hands cuffed in front of him, because he told officers he had an injury, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
As officers waited for a search warrant for his home, the man grabbed a glass plant-watering globe, which has a long thin reed, and stabbed himself in the neck, Jackson said.
He was rushed to a hospital but died.
The incident happened about 7:30 p.m., and officers were still conducting a search of the home at 9:30 p.m., so Jackson said he could not comment on what had been found, if anything.
The case began with complaints from neighbors about alleged drug activity at the home, which prompted officers’ visit, Jackson said.
