BISMARCK, N.D.—A man who authorities said impersonated a lawyer in courts around the country has been sentenced to four years and three months in prison and has been ordered to repay more than $150,000.

Howard O. Kieffer, of Duluth, Minn., must report to prison within 30 days. He did not speak and showed no emotion when he was sentenced Friday, but his attorney says he expects to appeal.

Kieffer was convicted by a Bismarck jury in April on charges of mail fraud and false statements.

Authorities say Kieffer lied on his application to practice law in federal court and worked on cases in at least 10 states. One of his former clients, a Colorado woman found guilty of hiring a hit man, is appealing her case based on Kieffer’s conviction.
