Last night, the Denver Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted 8-4 to allow the Poo Free Park pilot program to continue, despite protests from those who object to advertising in public parks.
“They voted in favor to allow the program to move forward but with smaller (advertising) signs,” said Denver’s Parks and Recreation Department spokeswoman Jill McGranahan.
Poo Free Parks was founded this year by Denver resident Bill Airy. The company is responsible for the installation of dispensers and keeping them stocked with biodegradable poop-pickup bags.
Airy plans to have local businesses pay to sponsor the dispensers, which are maintained by workers hired through the Providence Network, which helps find work for the uneducated and homeless.
The current sponsors have 12-by-18-inch signs on the dispensers. McGranahan said the board will require Airy to shrink the signs.
Airy began installing the dispensers in Denver dog parks on May 16.
