A boulder the size of a small suitcase crashed through the windshield of an SUV traveling west on Colorado 82 from Aspen to Carbondale late this afternoon.

The driver, a visitor from Missouri, tried to keep the Chevrolet Tahoe on the road but finally pulled over and was found slumped over the steering wheel. Emergency personnel carried him and a relative to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, where he died.

The passenger is listed in stable condition. Authorities have not released the identity of either person.

The boulder hit the black SUV near Snowmass Creek Road, about 4 miles southeast of Basalt at mile marker 26.75.
The boulder crashed through the windshield, hitting both occupants in the front seat. Emergency responders found the boulder in the right rear part of the SUV.
