Getting your player ready...

California-based conservationist Shireen Qudosi believes the best parties are those that are easy on the environment. She compiled these ideas for hosting an eco-chic shindig.

First things first: the invites.Use invitations made from recycled paper. It can look and feel just like high-grade paper — minus the guilty conscience. If ordering invites from a professional, ask for recycled paper. If your party is less formal, consider an electronic invitation.

No picking required. These days, well-made fake flowers can pass for the real thing. Aside from standard silk flowers, which are still made from the silk of silk worms, clay or paper flower arrangements also are available and long-lasting. If faux is not your thing, then get flowers from the local farmers market. Or create centerpieces using potted herbs.

Upcycled decorations. You don’t have to spend money on store-bought decorations when homemade decorations are far more interesting. Consider making paper mobiles, such as the popular origami crane mobiles.

Sip responsibly. There are three categories of eco-friendly wines: sustainable, organic and biodynamic. “Sustainable” means the grapes were grown with minimal chemicals. “Organic” wines are grown in certified organic vineyards and are made without added sulfites. “Biodynamic” winemaking goes way beyond organics as the soil is treated with complex compost preparations including quartz, yarrow flowers and stinging nettle. Jack Rabbit Hill is one Colorado vineyard known for its organic wines. Qudosi is fond of those from Demetria Estate or Beckman Vineyards, both in California. And, consider chilling your wine in an eco- friendly wine cooler like those sold by Air & Water Inc. (air-n-water.com).

Table style.Opt for tableware made from recycled materials. Target stocks recycled-glass goblets, and Macy’s sells cobalt blue stemless wine glasses made with 30 percent recycled glass.

Set the stage. The real drama at any party is the table. Your centerpiece should reflect the mood you want to create. Keep it green by using natural plants and flowers, sustainable dishware, and organic tablecloths, runners and napkins. And instead of leaving the lights on all night, consider using charming, mood-setting Asian paper lanterns made from recycled paper and bamboo.

The simplest rule.Use what you have, and borrow what you don’t. At the end of the day, a great party is about who you’re with, not what you have. Elana Ashanti Jefferson
