Douglas County officials have dropped charges in the case involved the shooting of a dog running loose that had killed a fawn deer and was attacking its mother.

Ron Wedow of Elbert County had been charged with cruelty to animals for shooting the dog, even though he acted in accordance with state law that authorizes anyone to intervene with force when such an attack takes place.

The law is designed specifically to protect wildlife from free-ranging dogs.
