Getting your player ready...

Stanford golfer Steve Ziegler, a Legacy High School product, used an eagle to help him take the lead heading into today’s final round of the Colorado Golf Association’s Stroke Play Championship at Lakewood Country Club.

Ziegler shot a 4-under-par 67 — including the eagle on the par-4 13th hole — on Saturday to move to 7-under 206, which led Tom Gempel of The Pinery Country Club and 15-year-old Wyndham Clark of Cherry Hills Country Club by one shot. Ziegler is trying to become the first player since 1985 to pull off a sweep of the CGA’s two top tournaments; he won the Match Play last month, defeating Gempel in the final. PGA Tour player Brandt Jobe won both events in 1985.

Gondrezick pleads guilty.

Former NBA player and Boulder High School graduate Grant Gondrezick pleaded guilty in a mortgage fraud case that involved the sale of 24 homes in the Houston suburbs.

U.S. Attorney Tim Johnson announced the plea by the 45-year-old Gondrezick on Friday. The former Houston resident faces up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000 and more than $1 million in restitution for conspiring to commit wire fraud.

Prosecutors say Gondrezick, a former Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers guard, submitted invoices for fraudulent home loans to pay for renovations and upgrades never performed.

Former Houston Rockets guard Dirk Minniefield also was charged in the case as a participating real estate agent. The 48-year-old Minniefield and two other defendants pleaded not guilty to charges in the case. They are scheduled for trial next year.

Former mountain bike world champion Ned Overend of Durango gave away 30 years — but only 16 seconds — while finishing second Saturday at the Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb in New Hampshire.

The 53-year-old Overend lost by 16 seconds to defending champion Phillip Gaimon, 23, of Tucker, Ga.

Gaimon recorded a personal-best time of 54 minutes, 37 seconds on the 7.6-mile course. Kevin Nicol, 42, of Lafayette was third with a time of 57:50.

Big 12 coaches: Buffs will finish third.

The Colorado women’s soccer team was picked to finish third in the Big 12 Conference after a preseason poll of the league’s coaches. The Buffaloes finished fourth in the Big 12 last season, but qualified for the conference championship game where they lost to Missouri.

Texas A&M and Missouri were each picked to finish first, with the Aggies receiving more first-place votes.

Buffs volleyball looking up at rest of league.
