Fire crews are watching a small fire burning in a critical area in the Eagle’s Nest Wilderness Area west of Silverthorne.
No homes are immediately threatened, but Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue and the U.S. Forest Service crews are concerned about tracts of beetle-killed lodgepole pine trees in the area, which could ignite into a large wildfire, according to a statement.
The fire began Monday afternoon in the South Willow Creek drainage between Buffalo Mountain and Red Peak at about 9,500 feet in elevation.
Smoke is visible to travelers on Interstate 70 from the Eisenhower Tunnel. Crews will make their first attempt to reach the fire Tuesday morning, depending on conditions, according to Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue.
