LINCOLN, Neb.—Nebraska coach Bo Pelini says competition for starting positions is heating up and that he expects his team to make a lot of progress this week.

The Cornhuskers practiced for 2 1/2 hours Monday, and Pelini said he and his staff are beginning to fit players into their roles for the season.

Nebraska will go through nine practices in the next six days.

Tight end Dreu Young, offensive lineman Ricky Henry and cornerback Alfonzo Dennard returned from injuries.

Offensive lineman Mike Smith sat out with a minor injury.
