COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A defense lawyer says a Colorado Springs man accused of beating, binding and kidnapping a woman was drunk and trying to get a ride.
Both sides made opening statements Monday in the trial of 42-year-old Timothy Allen Clapp, charged with kidnapping, robbery, assault, car theft and being a habitual criminal.
Prosecutors say Clapp attacked the 59-year-old woman with a piece of wood in May 2008, bound and gagged her with duct tape and then drove away in her car, with her in the back.
She was able to loosen the tape and call police on her cell phone.
Defense attorney Kim Chalmers says Clapp put the woman through an “awful ordeal” after going on a vodka bender. But Chalmers says Clapp didn’t beat or rob the woman.
