Qwest-brand wireless service will discontinue Oct. 31, and the company began sending 60-day notices to customers Tuesday.

In September and October, Qwest Wireless customers who have not changed providers will be routed to a service representative when they make a call. Before connecting the call, the representative will remind subscribers that Qwest is discontinuing its namesake wireless service.

At the end of the second quarter, there were fewer than 185,000 Qwest Wireless clients, said spokeswoman Johnna Hoff.

Customers can switch to any cellphone service without facing an early-termination fee, and their phone numbers can be transferred to the new provider.

Subscribers of Qwest Wireless, which was marketed through a partnership with Sprint Nextel, will have to switch to Verizon Wireless to continue receiving bundled discounts from Qwest.

Qwest announced last year that it was replacing Sprint with Verizon as its wireless partner. But instead of selling Qwest-branded wireless service, the company sells Verizon service as part of the bundle.
