WASHINGTON — An air-traffic controller was joking on the phone about barbecuing a dead cat minutes before a small plane collided with a tour helicopter over the Hudson River, transcripts obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press show.

Nine people died in the Aug. 8 accident.

The transcripts show that the controller had bantered earlier with a worker about a dead cat that she apparently had to remove from airport property. After the small plane took off, the controller called the woman back and again joked about the cat.

The transcripts don’t show the accident time, but the NTSB has said the call ended one second before the crash.
