ASPEN — A bear wanted for breaking into an Aspen home and attacking a woman this week returned to the property and was shot by wildlife officers Wednesday night, according to the state Division of Wildlife.

But the demise of the nuisance bear was hardly the city’s only encounter Wednesday. Police were called on 18 sightings in 24 hours, including two bears that broke into homes and one reported at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport, according to the Police Department.

Colorado Division of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton said the bear killed Wednesday night was a large male black bear that matched the description of the one that clawed the woman on her back and chest two days earlier.

The bear also was suspected of entering another house in the same neighborhood early Wednesday.

This summer, four bears have been killed in the Aspen area.
