A plan 10 years in the making was celebrated Wednesday when ground was broken to mark the second phase of construction for Parkfield Lake Park in northeast Denver.
“This is a significant regional park in this part of town,” said Denver City Councilman Michael Hancock. “It was promised to residents, and we fought to make sure this stayed on the 2007 bond. This is a great day.”
The 80-acre park at Chambers Road and East 53rd Avenue is one of 132 park-related bond projects funded by the city’s $550 million voter-approved Better Denver Bonds program. There was $13.7 million earmarked for the Parkfield Lake Park project, which is also getting money from Great Outdoors Colorado and the Denver Parks and Recreation Department.
The new park is adjacent to the Montbello Recreation Center, and when Phase III is completed in 2011, it will serve 50,000 residents living in Montbello, Parkfield, Green Valley Ranch, and the Stapleton and Gateway neighborhoods.
Phase II, including two picnic shelters, a parking lot and new trails, is expected to be complete in the spring of 2010. It will be followed closely by the start of Phase III — recreation fields and an amphitheater — with construction expected to last through the summer of 2011.
