ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Napa, Calif., police department Friday reopened its investigation into an attack that left Raiders assistant coach Randy Hanson with a broken bone in his face.

Hanson was hospitalized following the Aug. 5 attack that he told police was initiated by a member of the Raiders coaching staff at the team’s training camp hotel in Napa. Internet reports said head coach Tom Cable attacked Hanson during a meeting with some of the team’s defensive coaches.

Cable, a former assistant coach at the University of Colorado, would not comment when asked Friday about the news that the police had reopened the investigation. Earlier in the week, he said “nothing happened.”

“When all the facts come out, everything will be fine,” Cable said Thursday.

The police said this week that the case was closed because the victim was unwilling to cooperate.

On Friday, the department announced that it had been reopened, apparently after Hanson agreed to cooperate with authorities.

The NFL is looking into the case to determine if Cable violated the league’s personal conduct policy.

Maybin signs with Bills

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Aaron Maybin, the Bills’ top draft choice, signed a five-year contract that includes about $15 million in guaranteed money.

The signing of Maybin, a defensive end selected 11th overall out of Penn State, leaves only two first-round draft picks unsigned: offensive tackle Andre Smith, selected sixth overall by Cincinnati; and receiver Michael Crabtree, who was drafted 10th by San Francisco.

Punt blocked . . . by TV

ARLINGTON, Texas — Titans rookie punter A.J. Trapasso’s boot in the third quarter of the opening game at the new Cowboys Stadium hit one of the 60-yard long high-definition video screens that hang about 90 feet above the field.

Trapasso pointed up at the board when the ball dropped straight down. Officials were slow to realize what happened until Titans coach Jeff Fisher threw his red challenge flag to get their attention.

By rule, the ball was dead and fourth down was replayed. Trapasso’s ensuing kick skimmed just to the side of the board without touching it.

Trapasso and veteran Titans punter Craig Hentrich both hit the screen during pregame warmups, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says there are no plans to raise the massive screens any higher. The Cowboys went on to defeat the Titans 30-10.

Legal battle heats up

RENO, Nev. — A lawyer for the woman who claims Ben Roethlisberger raped her at Lake Tahoe last summer is asking a judge to sanction the Steelers quarterback’s legal team, saying they tried to “bully” her into dropping her civil lawsuit.

Roethlisberger’s lawyers tried to smear the woman with an affidavit from an ex-friend who said the sex in Roethlisberger’s room at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe hotel-casino was consensual and that the woman bragged about it, said Cal Dunlap, her Reno lawyer.

He also said in a motion filed in Reno that Roethlisberger’s lawyers made a settlement offer this week suggesting they might countersue her for defamation — a move Dunlap said “borders on criminal extortion.”
