Heatley wants out of Ottawa

KELOWNA, British Columbia — Ottawa Senators winger Dany Heatley reiterated his desire for a trade, saying he’s unhappy with his diminished role.

“When I signed in Ottawa two years ago, I felt it was to be an integral part of the team,” Heatley said. “Over the last two years and more recently over the past year, I feel my role was diminished. This past season, it diminished a lot more.”

The two-time 50-goal scorer said if he’s still a Senator next month, he will report to training camp. He signed a $45 million, six-year extension less than two years ago.

Red Bulls coach resigns

SECAUCUS, N.J. — New York Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osorio resigned and was replaced for the rest of the season by assistant coach Richie Williams.

Less than a year after playing for the Major League Soccer championship, the Red Bulls have the worst record in the league at 2-16-4.

In his two seasons, Osorio led the Red Bulls to a 12-27-13 record.

A $400,000 offer on the table

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Two online wagering businesses are offering to add $400,000 to the purse of the Beldame Stakes, hoping to entice Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta into running against each other at Belmont Park.

The pledge announced by TVG and Betfair Ltd. would create a $1 million purse for the Oct. 3 race if the two female stars are in the starting gate.

Rachel Alexandra’s principal owner, Jess Jackson, would not commit or rule out such a meeting.

“I understand the growing excitement around a race that involves these two magnificent athletes competing, but both camps need to do what is in the best interest of the horse,” Jackson said.
