Former Republican Congressman Bob Beauprez announced Monday that he will not be a candidate for the U.S Senate.

“Having been presented with the potential to serve in the United States Senate, Claudia and I considered it very carefully. However after significant reflection, I will not be a candidate for the Senate in 2010,” he wrote in an e-mail to supporters.

Beauprez, who left the House of Representatives in 2007 and lost the 2006 gubernatorial race to Democrat Bill Ritter, had been contemplating a Senate run.

There are three GOP candidates vying to unseat Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet, who was appointed by Ritter this year. They are: Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck, Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier, and Cleve Tidwell of Denver.

Last week, The Denver Post reported that former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton is also looking at joining the GOP field. Curtis Hubbard, The Denver Post
