GYPSUM, Colo.—Before planes start taking off from the refurbished runway at the Eagle County Regional Airport, bicyclists, runners and kids get to romp on it.
The airport plans a “Romp the Runway” party Wednesday on the newly repaired and lengthened landing strip serving nearby Vail and other resort towns.
The party will include a bike race, a 5K run, a children’s obstacle course, chalk drawing and other events.
Terminal manager Chris Anderson says it’s a way to thank the community for putting up with the inconvenience of the five-year, $40 million project.
The airport has suspended all flights since April 15 because of the construction. The runway and the airport reopen on Sept. 1.
