Since nothing can ruin a good nature walk like a trail of cigarette butts, candy wrappers or ducklings tangled up in discarded fishing line, Summit County-based Fishpond has introduced the portable microtrash container it calls Piopod (MSRP: $13). The “PIO” prefix stands for “Pack It Out,” and the 3-inch pod is the unit to do it with.
Originally designed as a convenient disposal spot for monofilament fishing line that can endure for decades in the wild (simply wrap the line around your finger, stuff it in the pod and the soft, rubber teeth on the cap will peel it off inside), the handy Piopod works just as well for hikers and birders sharing the ripple effect by maintaining the habitat they enjoy so much. It’s designed to clip onto a belt, backpack or fishing vest and has plenty of room for more than 100 feet of fishing line, multiple paper or plastic wrappers and the whole pack of gum that could otherwise make its way to the soles of unsuspecting shoes. Keep one in the car as an alternative to stashing micro- trash in the ashtray.
