A retired officer with the Colorado State Patrol died in a motorcycle accident over the weekend in southwestern Colorado.

Robert “Bob” Habliston, 70, was driving a Harley Davidson motorcycle south on U.S. 550 in Ouray County when he lost control of the bike, rolled it and collided with two oncoming motorcycles.

Habliston had crested an incline and swerved to avoid a vehicle that was making a left-hand turn off the highway when the bike laid down, said Trooper Ryan Sullivan, a spokesman with the state patrol.

The two other motorcycle drivers were injured, one seriously and the other with moderate injuries, Sullivan said.

The accident happened Saturday.

All three drivers were wearing helmets.

Alcohol or drugs are not suspected of contributing to the accident, which remains under investigation.

At the time he retired, on Jan. 1, 1994, Lt. Col. Habliston was one of three officers serving as second-in-command of the patrol, under then-chief John Dempsey.

Habliston served more than 28 years with the patrol, including 12 years as commander of the Western Slope.

Habliston is survived by his wife, Susan, among other family members.

Details on his service are pending.
