Whether your preference is skinny or fat, this weekend offers the opportunity to “tri” it in Colorado.
The skinny
The Steamboat Triathlon at Lake Catamount in Steamboat Springs offers a tri of the traditional sort: swim 3/4-mile in Lake Catamount, bike 20 miles (on skinny tires) through Steamboat, run 4 miles. It’s a relatively high- altitude course (6,795 feet) with spectacular scenery. The event is under new management and includes a prerace sports and fitness expo featuring live music Saturday and Sunday (race day). A new youth category (ages 14-19) offers discounted registration fees. The race begins Sunday at 8 a.m. with a mandatory pre- race meeting Saturday.

The fat
The Fat Tire Classic is an off-road triathlon at Lory State Park made up of a half-mile swim in Horsetooth Reservoir, a 12-mile bike ride on dirt trails (including singletrack through rolling terrain with fun descents) and a 4.8-mile ridgeline trail run. The playful course is great for first-timers and experts alike. The event produced by Without Limits took a two-year break and makes its return Sunday at 8 a.m. with a limit of 275 participants.
