BANGKOK — Malaysian authorities gave a last-minute, temporary reprieve Monday to a Muslim woman sentenced to a whipping for drinking alcohol.
Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, who confessed to violating Islamic laws by drinking beer in a hotel lobby last year, was picked up by prison authorities Monday but then released.
The authorities said Kartika’s punishment would be carried out in September, after the Muslim holy month of Ramadan is over.
