Two people suspected of being involved in a burglary near the University of Denver last week are in custody while two other suspects escaped despite a widespread search by police near the school, Denver police said this afternoon.

Sonny Jackson, spokesman for the Denver Police Department, said that around 10:30 a.m., a patrol officer spotted a car matching the description of one used in a burglary cruising up and down the streets near DU.

After backup arrived, officers pulled the car over and arrested one man and a juvenile girl. But two other men in the car fled on foot.

Jackson said a large number of Denver officers and canine units unsuccessfully searched for the men in the area around East Asbury Avenue and South Lafayette Street, northwest of the main campus.

There have been about two dozen home burglaries near DU since November. The mode of entry into the homes has varied and not all the burglaries involved DU students’ residences.

Victims and the university have said stolen items included laptops, other computers, MP3 players, video-game consoles and cash.
