Coach: Tom Thenell

2008 record: 8-3

Returning starters: Eight offense, six defense

Last playoff appearance: Lost 42-21 to Cherry Creek in second round

Strengths: Strong senior class and lines manning usually high-octane offense, notably the passing game

Weaknesses: Bears a little thin in secondary and program coming off an adjustment period while school facilties had an overhaul.

Players to watch: Austin Bennett, Sr., C-DE, 6-3, 260; Armoni Brewington, Sr., WR, 6-1, 170; Dylon Chafin, Sr., S-Slot, 6-0, 185; Vinnie Delmonico, Sr., DE-OLB, 6-2, 190; Dylan Heitsmith, Sr., G-DT, 6-2, 341; Lukas Lockett, Sr., RB, 6-1, 200; Cody Nolte, Sr., ILB, 6-1, 195; Jordan Pacheco, Sr., DL-LB, 5-6, 190; Isaac Quintana, Sr., DB, 5-10, 155; P.J. In 2009: As usual, Bears have the goods to be statewide challengers. This time, they also are stronger inside and have an intriguing senior class. Offense could be the best we have.

Coach: Bret McGatlin

2008 record: 6-5

Returning starters: Five offense, five defense

Last playoff appearance: Lost 28-3 to Pomona in second round

In 2009: Athletic Chargers probably have their best offensive group since their 2001 undefeated champions. Surviving tough league, which will challenge their depth, will be the trick in landing a prime playoff seed.

Coach: Andy Lowry

2008 record: 11-2

Returning starters: Four offense, two defense

Last playoff appearance: Lost 27-25 to Cherry Creek in semifinals

In 2009: Even if you believe the Rebels are smaller and greener up front, be advised that they have the one great player (Spond), a difference-maker, capable of carrying them to a title.

Coach: Mark Robinson

2008 record: 2-8

Returning starters: Two offense, five defense

Last playoff appearance: 2006

In 2009: So what else is new? Panthers a factor in a stacked league, in search of a good playoff seed and capable of obtaining it. Their past three playoff runs have been ended by rival Columbine, which they downed last year to tie for the league title.

Coach: Mark Nolan

2008 record: 4-6

Returning starters: Five offense, five defense

Last playoff appearance: Lost 20-17 to Legacy in first round

In 2009: Under new management – Nolan’s a former director of Colorado Buffaloes recruiting – Raiders’ goal hasn’t changed. They yearn to be relevant among 5A’s elite.

Coach: Tom Doherty

2008 record: 4-6

Returning starters: Five offense; four defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 62-39 to Bear Creek in first round

Returning starters: One offense, one defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 26-20 to Cherry Creek in quarterfinals

Weaknesses: As is the case with so many other programs looking to make a move, lines are light and thin

Players to watch: Cody Allenbrand, Sr., TE, 6-0, 195; Cole Allenbrand, Sr., DE, 6-1, 205; Ben Marum, Jr., WR, 6-3, 175; Colton Richard, Sr., LB, 5-11, 185; Sam Seeton, Jr., RB, 5-11, 185; Caleb Spaulding, Sr., DE, 6-2, 235.

In 2009: Lambkins feeling good about being in the league mix. In preseason, the top end of the Front Range was within site and they want a piece of it.

Coach: Frank Ybarra

2008 record: 2-8

Returning starters: Six offense, six defense

Last playoff appearance: 2007

Strengths: O-line has three three-year starters; running backs and linebackers are the deepest parts of the team

Weaknesses: Inexperienced at quarterback; unproven at wide receiver and in the secondary

Players to watch: Mark Drotar, Sr., LB, 6-2, 225; Ryan Evans, Sr., MLB-FB, 6-1, 230; D’Andre Knight, Sr., OLB, 6-0, 175; Darius Knight, Sr., RB, 6-0, 170; Sung Lee, Sr., G, 6-1, 270; Matt Lloyd, Sr., OL, 6-2, 225; Kevin Owens, Sr., RB, 5-11, 180; Cole Waliczek, Sr., FS-WR, 5-11, 175.

In 2009: Ybarra, a hard-working, no-nonsense yet excitable sort, said, “this is the best group I’ve coached.” So if the Hawks want to revisit their glory days, it’s a good season to try. The Front Range favorite has yet to emerge.

Coach: Wayne Voorhees

2008 record: 9-2

Returning starters: Four offense, four defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 3-0 to Poudre (in 2OT) in second round

Strengths: Speed and quickness dots the offense, and running game has experienced ball carriers

Weaknesses: Lightning won’t be its usual size up front; on-the-job training at multiple spots will have to suffice

Players to watch: Corey Ayers, Jr., LB, 6-1, 195; Colton Chavez, Sr., RB, 6-0, 210; Kaden Hush, Sr., OL-LB, 5-11, 205; Shawn Jenkins, Sr., DL, 6-1, 240; Bradie Koch, Jr., QB, 5-11, 180; Jake Levin, Sr., RB, 6-1, 205; Bob May, Jr., TE, 6-2, 195; Justin Muench, Jr., FS, 5-11, 170; Nate Pickens, Sr., OLB, 5-10, 187; Kip Smith, Sr., K, 6-2, 225.

In 2009: Legacy. It’s the answer to the question: Which team has annually challenged in the Front Range? The Lightning, who figure to rush more, is replacing more than usual, but quality control has been consistent.

Coach: Bryan Davey

2008 record: 3-7

Returning starters: Nine offense, nine defense

Last playoff appearance: Never qualified

Strengths: Overall returning experience for starters; defensive core

Weaknesses: The unknown is behind the first-teamers; Mustangs in coaching transition in just their second season of big schools

Players to watch: Cody DelReal, Sr., DB, 6-2, 165; Bryce Dunkelberger, Sr., MLB, 6-0, 195; Justin Ellis, Sr., DE, 6-1, 220; Zach Hartman, Sr., FB, 5-11, 220; Caylen Hunter, Sr., DB, 5-10, 165; James Kelly, Jr., DE, 6-3, 215; Alex Kizirian, Sr., NG, 6-1, 230; Tyler Larson, Sr., G, 6-3, 220; Shaun Maestas, Sr., QB, 6-0, 155; Alex McKenzie, Sr., T, 6-2, 225.

In 2009: In their fourth season, the Mustangs’ mercurial climb would be highly rewarded with a .500 mark. Attaining quick competitiveness would attract increased participation as well as following in a North Metro area that enjoys its high school sports.

Coach: Scott Gallas

2008 record: 2-8

Returning starters: Four offense, four defense

Last playoff appearance: 2007

Strengths: Offensive line; quarterback

Weaknesses: Bad combination – Norse have little depth and will be inexperienced; only a half-dozen seniors

Players to watch: Brian Brittner, Sr., OL-DL, 6-0, 260; DeVonte Chapple, Sr., OL-DL, 6-5, 250; Drew Compton, Jr., G, 6-0, 185; Andrew Garcia, Sr., C, 5-10, 240; Kyle Haney, Sr., G-DE, 6-1, 190; Isaac Munoz, Jr., LB, 6-0, 195; Jarred Radebaugh, Jr., QB, 5-10, 175; Zack Sanders, Sr., TE, 6-2, 200.

In 2009: Gallas (head coach from 1992-2004) returning to the Norse is about as big of a story as there is among big schools. His absence was felt – Northglenn didn’t have a winning record in the four years he was gone – so why not his return, too?

Coach: Steve Bradley

2008 record: 10-3

Returning starters: Five offense, three defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 48-21 to Mullen in semifinals

Strengths: Standard doses of size and speed; Secondary should be very active

Weaknesses: Unusually, offensive line will be green (inexperienced); defensive questions – such as which Impalas will be this year’s stalwarts? – to be answered at game time

Players to watch: Brian Beethe, Sr., C, 5-11, 205; Mason Biggi, Sr., WR-DB, 5-10, 165; Sam Carlson, Jr., T, 6-4, 255; M Dick, Sr., QB, 5-11, 178; Tyler Humphrey, Sr., S-Slot, 5-10, 165; Teran Mawhinney, Jr., RB, 5-9, 155; Callahan Montoya, Sr., ILB, 5-10, 205; Stephen Valentino, Sr., OLB, 5-11, 215; Drake Wood, Sr., DL, 6-2, 210; Matt Zander, Sr., NG, 5-10, 285; Ben Zenner, Sr., WR, 6-0, 175.

In 2009: Newer Impalas being asked to grow up quickly. Bradley also agreed last year’s team “played right at the right time.” A repeat performance in an open league could lead to another fun run.

Coach: Mark Brook

2008 record: 11-1

Returning starters: Five offense, two defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 38-21 to Mullen in quarterfinals

Strengths: Another good senior class sprinkled throughout the offense, especially up front and at receiver

Weaknesses: Defensive replacements wanted; growing pains expected

Players to watch: Dane Anderson, Sr., TE, 6-1, 205; Troy-Michael Armstead, Sr., OL, 6-1, 230; Dante Conti, Sr, K-SS, 5-11, 170; Dan Green, Sr., LB, 6-1, 205; Garrett Karp, Sr., T, 6-5, 240; J.T. Leidholt, Sr., WR, 6-2, 185; Brode McDonald, Jr., LB-QB, 6-1, 190; Dillon McNamee, Sr., OL, 6-6, 240; Alex Oberto, Sr., OL, 6-0, 240; Mike Seidel, Sr., WR, 5-9, 165.

In 2009: Lobos realize they will be different from last year’s dynamic team. They have assorted skill, but consistently making plays on defense would be a welcomed site. Their overall quality should keep them in the league hunt.

Coach: John Vogt

2008 record: 8-3

Returning starters: Four offense, three defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 38-17 to Mullen second round

Strengths: Size matters, at least up front; Wolverines’ best team speed in Vogt’s three years

Weaknesses: Eighteen seniors are gone, so experience at key positions will be earned on the fly

Players to watch: Brendon Austin, Jr., T, 6-6, 260; Spencer Duran, Sr., RB, 6-0, 180; Christian Gann, Jr., QB, 6-3, 210; Tommy Harris, Jr., DE, 6-6, 200; Andrew Loudenback, Jr., QB, 6-3, 210; Mykel Morse, Sr., DB-Ret., 5-11, 175; Jordan Serena, Jr., WR, 6-1, 170; Tyler Watson, Sr., MLB, 6-1, 220.

In 2009: Balance on offense is on the minds of the Wolverines, whose mix would be vital in what appears to be a smashmouth season within the league. Opportunities for separation are a plus – they may be one of the fastest groups within the Southern.

Coach: Matt Wibbels

2008 record: 3-7

Returning starters: Seven offense, six defense

Last playoff appearance: 2007

Strengths: Veterans at skill positions; offensive line has some beef

Weaknesses: Key areas to avoid injury – the lines and secondary; attendance by first-teamers in those spots is mandatory

Players to watch: Zach Donahoe, Sr., QB, 6-1, 190; Layton Flynn, Sr., WR-DB, 5-8, 165; Alex Garcia, Sr., OL, 6-1, 230; Mark Jones, Sr., DB, 5-8, 165; Matt Oesterle, Sr., OL-DL, 6-2, 245; Jaden Terry, Sr., MLB-RB, 6-2, 235.

In 2009: After taking more than a few lumps a year ago, revitalized Spartans set to re-establish themselves. They have multiple front-liners worthy to watch, but backing them up over the course of a physical league season will be one of their musts.

Coach: Jeff Ketron

2008 record: 8-4

Returning starters: Two offense, two defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 31-17 to Poudre in quarterfinals

Strengths: Ball-handlers promising; key regulars on both lines

Weaknesses: The most holes to fill since Huskies’ 43-10 run began in 2005

Players to watch: Zach Beach, Sr., DE, 6-2, 240; Jeremy Beck, Sr., QB, 6-4, 175; Matt Hahn, Sr., LB, 6-0, 198; Casey Joy, Sr., FS, 5-11, 175; Jake Korth, Sr., WR, 5-9, 170; Mike Moudy, Sr., 6-7, 300; Cody Padalecki, Sr., RB-WR, 5-9, 170; Justin Viays, Sr., DL, 6-0, 210.

In 2009: Hoping their relative youth will serve as a stimulus package, Huskies are looking for a quick yield. They have the most momentum in the conference and are employing what it takes to churn out a top-flight program year in, year out.

Coach: Darrell Gorham

2008 record: 6-4

Returning starters: One offense, one defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 49-30 to East in first round

Strengths: Influx of new talent; running backs

Weaknesses: Conversely, little experience; lighter upper classes; first varsity snaps will be a regularity

Players to watch: Tony Audino, So., QB, 5-10, 160; Mike Brady, Sr., RB, 5-10, 180; Steve Donatell, So., QB, 6-2, 175; James Gardner, Jr., T, 6-0, 205; Jared Gomes, Sr., K, 5-9, 150; Tyler Jones, Sr., T, 6-2, 205; Troy Josey, So., DE, 6-2, 215; Connor McClanahan, Sr., RB-OLB, 6-0, 185; Connor McFadden, So., QB, 6-2, 170; Taylor Vincent, Jr., G, 6-0, 230.

In 2009: Anyone’s guess Falcons have a slew of new players earning their first starts. Gorham prefers a straight-platoon system and the time is here to bring it along with the inexperienced.

Coach: Ric Cash

2008 record: 5-5

Returning starters: Five offense, four defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 28-6 to Cherokee trail in first round

Strengths: Three of four linebackers return; better speed; wide receivers

Weaknesses: Linemen lack varsity resumes; backfield and secondary questions at the outset

Players to watch: Brian Caggiano, Sr., ILB, 6-4, 225; Ryan Fix, Sr., ILB, 5-11, 195; Jonathan Fraker, Sr., OLB, 6-2, 195; Jesse Geary, Jr., FB, 5-11, 210; Brandon Oswald, Sr., TE, 6-3, 200; Troy Whitmer, Sr., OL, 6-2, 260; Tanner Witcombe, Sr., WR-Ret., 5-11, 165.

In 2009: Golden Eagles looking to stop a trend – in order, they have been 10-2, 8-3 and 5-5 the past three seasons. On the positive side, their second line of defense figures to be very active in terms of running to the ball.

Coach: Rod Baker

2008 record: 1-9

Returning starters: Three offense, three defense

Last playoff appearance: 2007

Strengths: Improved upper classes; running backs and secondary

Weaknesses: Linemen, including backups, wanted

Players to watch: Larry Bautista, Sr., OL, 6-0, 225; Andre Brown, Sr., QB, 6-3, 210; Ronnie Buggs, Sr., WR, 6-2, 205; Robert McDougal, Sr., RB, 5-10, 170; Lars Osuna, DB, 5-11, 170; Joe Pennington, Sr., DL, 6-2, 235; Dominic Rufran, Jr., RB-WR, 5-11, 175; Anthony Rugg, Jr., OL, 6-2, 235; Chris Urbaniak, Jr., S, 6-4, 205.

In 2009: Maturity will be big for Terrors, who wrote off the past season as an aberration. Their speed and athleticism has returned and should make a grow-up year appealing with an eye toward the future.

Coach: Randy Huff

2008 record: 4-6

Returning starters: Six offense, six defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 27-6 to Cherry Creek in first round

Strengths: Offensive line; linebackers; running game

Weaknesses: Defensive line and wide receivers will have to earn their keep

Players to watch: Colter Flenthrope, Sr., OLB, 6-0, 195; D.J. Flynn, Sr., DE, 6-3, 250; Austin Gable, Jr., OLB, 5-10, 160; Riley Lange, Sr., LB-FB, 6-3, 225; Sean Pollinex, Jr., T, 6-8, 280; Mike Segura, Sr., RB, 5-10, 165; Tommy Thornton, So., QB, 6-0, 175.

In 2009: In preseason, area teams noted the Mustangs’ size and ability. Despite losing four transfers to nearby Chaparral, Ponderosa’s in a thick Southern chase.

Coach: Paul Passno

2008 record: 2-8

Returning starters: One offense, two defense

Last playoff appearance: 2004

Strengths: Good speed; numbers up in program

Weaknesses: Rams lack size up front and experience at nearly every position

Players to watch: Cameron Brown, Jr., LB-FB, 5-9, 205; Dalton Detwiler, Jr., WR-DB, 6-2, 170; David Hensle, Jr., WR-DB, 5-11, 165; Zach Looney, Sr., RB-DB, 6-0, 170; David Melander, Sr., QB-DB, 6-0, 170; Andre Nichols, Sr., DE-TE, 6-3, 215; Nick Noble, Jr., RB-LB, 5-11, 205; Dylan Russell, Jr., TE-LB, 6-3, 195; Chris Smith, Sr., C-DE, 6-0, 190; Zach Vanwagenen, Sr., ILB-RB, 6-2, 210; Marshall Zimmerman, Sr., WR-DB, 6-3, 180.

In 2009: Late of Colorado Springs Christian, Passno hopes Rams’ usual talent will fit into his I-formation offense and turn it a factor in the league race, although getting to know each other comes first.

Coach: Joe Johnson

2008 record: 10-1

Returning starters: Five offense, four defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 59-26 to Douglas County in second round

Strengths: Offensive linemen are as big and athletic in program history

Weaknesses: Questions at wide receiver and if the Grizzlies will be as dynamic at skill positions

Players to watch: Daniel Archuleta, Sr., DT, 6-3, 250; Dillon Bonnell, Sr., OL-DL, 6-4, 280; Ryan Ewen, Sr., G, 6-3, 240; Kwade Glassman, Sr., RB, 5-11, 190; Kenneth Hulbert, Sr., OLB-S, 6-0, 200; Cole Manhart, Sr., OL-DL, 6-5, 240; Derek Munsey, Sr., RB, 5-10, 175; Jake Reidel, Jr., LB, 6-1, 200; Justin Travis, Sr., RB, 5-7, 175; Matt Walker, Sr., DB, 6-1, 170; Alex Waner, Sr., QB, 6-0, 165.

In 2009: By winning their first 10 games in their first season in 5A a year ago, Grizzlies had the personnel to mix it up. This time, they’ll probably be the ThunderRidge of 4A, as in pounding it, pounding it and pounding it again.

Coach: Vern McGee

2008 record: 5-5

Returning starters: Six offense, two defense

Last playoff appearance: 2007, lost 49-7 to Chaparral in first round

Strengths: Inner core of offensive line in front of a promising quarterback

Weakness: Defense has two no-no’s – no experience and no speed

Players to watch: David Acevado, St., T, 6-2, 250; Mical Kramer, Sr., T, 6-3, 230; Holden Reed, Sr., QB, 6-2, 190; Mike Ruble, Sr., DB, 5-8, 150; Vardon Sanchez, Sr., WR-S, 5-9 150; Aaron Wallway, Jr., WR-S, 6-0, 170.

In 2009: Warriors fairly confident they’ll move the ball and score. However, getting it together on defense, if they can, will be long-running prime objective.

Coach: Billy Moore

2008 record: 4-6

Returning starters: Four offense, seven defense

Last playoff appearance: 2008, lost 42-7 to Columbine in first round

Strengths: Athleticism and capability from a better talent pool

Weaknesses: Overall inexperience; mostly underclassmen will not only suit for varsity, but earn a lot of downs

Players to watch: Colt Burtaro, Sr., OLB, 5-7, 195; Bret Dana, Sr., RB, 5-8, 185; Tyler Daniels, Jr., WR, 5-8, 150; Twan Martin, Sr., OL, 6-1, 280; A.J. Meil, Sr., OLB, 5-9, 190; Matt Remy, Sr., OL, 6-2, 225.

In 2009: In their sixth consecutive season among big schools, Wildcats once again will both stay within their traditional Southwestern foes and face five others this side of the Rocky Mountains in order for meaningful wild-card points. It makes for an interesting season.

Coach: Robbie Owens

2008 record: 3-7

Returning starters: Three offense, seven defense

Last playoff appearance: 2005

Strengths: Noticeable maturity and experience; improved speed

Weaknesses: Nice group of retuning starters, but the unknown is behind them; Tigers also on the smaller side

Players to watch: Jayke Brock, Sr., RB-LB, 6-1, 190; Mitch Irwin, Sr., LB, 6-1, 220; Sean Rubalcaba, So., QB, 6-1, 180; Tim Saro, Sr., K, 6-2, 170; Tyler Stanford, Sr., LB-TE, 6-2, 195; Andy Willett, Jr., FS-WR, 5-9, 175.

In 2009: A league championship is a viable goal. Tigers return more than usual and can match up with any other outfit on their side of the hill. How they will do versus non-league foes is a queston they’d like answered.
