Jason Giambi hit his second home run since joining the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, but the visiting Salt Lake Bees got four RBIs from Ryan Budde in a 7-4 victory Sunday in a Pacific Coast League game.
Giambi’s solo homer in the fourth inning brought the Sky Sox within 4-2. But Budde doubled and scored in the seventh inning as Salt Lake pulled away.
Sky Sox starting pitcher Brandon Hynick (10-9) allowed four hits and five runs in six innings.
Salt Lake (66-69) pulled within 3 1/2 games of division-leading Colorado Springs (69-65) and Tacoma (70-66).
DU women’s soccer team ties No. 13 Illinois.
The University of Denver women’s soccer team jumped to an early lead after freshman Kaitlin Bast scored in the fourth minute and the Pioneers (2-0-1) earned a 1-1 tie with No. 13 Illinois in the DU Invitational.
Bast scored on assists from Mariah Johnston and Lizzy Carlson for her first career goal. Illinois (2-0-1) answered in the 80th minute after a corner kick led to Cory Steigerwald’s goal.
Buffs women topple St. Mary’s College in soccer.
Kelly Butler and Nikki Marshall each scored two goals in leading the No. 18 Colorado women’s soccer team to an 8-1 win over St. Mary’s College in the DU Invitational.
Marshall’s goal 23 seconds into the game was the quickest goal scored in team history. Marshall scored again in the third minute, and Butler scored less than two minutes later to give the Buffs (2-1) a 3-0 lead.
Freshmen lift AFA women’s soccer.
Air Force (1-2-1) got goals from freshmen Kim Koeppen and Anna Lowe for a 2-1 victory over Austin Peay (0-3) at the Razorback Classic in Fayetteville, Ark. It was the first career win for rookie coach Larry Friend.
DU’s Davidsmeyer sets volleyball record in loss.
Denver’s Emmy Davidsmeyer had a career-high 19 kills, but fifth-ranked Stanford defeated the Pioneers 3-0 in the fifth match of the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The Cardinal (2-1) won 25-22, 25-23, 25-20. Denver (0-3) got 13 digs from Kacie Wikierak.
Grandview grad leads UNLV volleyball.
Sara Nehf, a graduate of Grandview High School, had 11 kills and 12 digs to lead UNLV to its first win of the season, 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19) over Valparaiso in the Campus USA Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
