NEW YORK — Sprint Nextel said Thursday it will sell its first phone running Google’s Android software in October, giving the Internet giant a larger foothold in the mobile world. Consumers are slowly embracing the platform, which has been available only through T-Mobile.

Sprint continues to lose subscribers at an alarming clip. But recently it has released a string of notable devices, including the Palm Pre. Enter the HTC Hero, a smartphone that marks the first in a wave of Android devices expected to hit the market in coming months. Motorola and Samsung plan to unveil phones this month.
