ASPEN, Colo.—The bears foraging for food in Aspen’s garbage cans, houses and cars aren’t going to turn up their snouts at more natural grub, such as the crab apples dangling from trees around the resort town.

The town is considering spraying the trees next spring when the blossoms are peaking, causing the trees to abort production of fruit for the summer.

State and local authorities have responded to numerous calls this season about bears scrounging for food in homes and vehicles. Some of the animals have been moved. A few have been killed after attacking or confronting people.

Experts say the main draw for the bears is human food, but the crab apples are just one more temptation.

People are being urged to pick the apples from their trees to remove a little of the temptation.
