LEESBURG, Va. — A former top lieutenant to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. died before he could serve most of his 15-year sentence for incest, but his victim returned to a courtroom Thursday to argue that his conviction should stand.
The judge declined to throw out the Rev. James Bevel’s conviction after the daughter he was convicted of having sex with testified that she would be crushed if the case were to be erased from the books.
