Friday is the eighth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon. Local groups are organizing memorials and service projects to commemorate the day.

  •  West Metro Firefighters Local 1309 is hosting a “Community Memorial Stair Climb” at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison. West Metro firefighters hope the community will climb side-by-side with them to honor the 343 firefighters and 2,631 Americans who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

    All participants will take part in a “110-story equivalent stair climb” as they climb the amphitheater steps in nine laps from the stage to the top.

    The climb will begin after a moment of silence and the performance of Amazing Grace at 8:45 a.m. Participants should check in and register by 8:15 a.m. in the south upper parking lot. More than 300 people have registered, and hundreds more are expected to join in that morning. There is a $15 registration fee for the event; all proceeds will be donated to the Twin Towers Orphan Fund.

  •  The Denver Marriott City Center hotel is supporting the fifth “9/11 Memorial Stair Climb,” in which 343 Denver-area firefighters will climb the nearby 55-story Qwest tower in downtown Denver twice to commemorate the 343 New York City firefighters who perished in the 110-story World Trade Center complex on Sept. 11.

    The Denver Marriott City Center Executive Team will be providing a free barbecue lunch to the firefighters, police officers, their families and friends in the plaza area outside the hotel. Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, visit .

  •  As part of the “Sept. 11 Day of Service and Remembrance,” and the culmination of President Obama’s “United We Serve” initiative, the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter is partnering with the Denver Police Department and Gov. Bill Ritter to distribute preparedness information to the public on the 16th Street Mall in Denver.

    This day also is the centerpiece of National Preparedness Month, which encourages citizens to prepare for both manmade and natural disasters.

    At 10 a.m. in front of Denver police headquarters, 1331 Cherokee St., Ritter will make some brief remarks about Sept. 11 and the Day of Service and Remembrance. At 10:10 a.m., a group of volunteers and officers will walk from police headquarters to the 16th Street Mall, where they will distribute READY Colorado fliers to the public from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m.

  •  As part of the “United We Serve,” initiative, there will be an Energy Efficiency Outreach program at Knapp Elementary School, 500 S. Utica St., in the southeast corner of the field behind the school. Volunteers will share consumer-focused, energy-efficiency resources with residents in low-income neighborhoods to help them conserve energy, reduce costs and stay warmer in their homes.   •  Students at Century and Jewell elementary schools in Aurora will celebrate the lives of the everyday heroes who protect them and remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11.

    The Daughters of the American Revolution is joining the Aurora Fire Department and the Aurora Police Department in bringing the special ceremony to the schools.

    Events include a flag presentation, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the national anthem. Every student will hold a small American flag during the ceremony, donated by Graebel Cos. The ceremonies are at 9:30 a.m. at Century Elementary School, 2500 S. Granby Way, and at 10:30 a.m. at Jewell Elementary School, 14601 E. Jewell Ave.

  •  As part of the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance, Kaiser Permanente will donate at 10 a.m. more than 70 pieces of furniture to Martin Luther King Jr. Early College, 19535 E. 46th Ave.

    “By performing good deeds or engaging in other forms of charitable service during the week of 9/11, Kaiser Permanente will join people throughout the nation in rekindling the remarkable spirit of unity, service and compassion shared by so many in the immediate aftermath of the attacks.”

  •  College Republicans from seven universities across Colorado will create memorial fields of 2,977 flags on the grounds of their campuses in honor of those who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Citizens are invited to visit campuses.

    Participating are the University of Northern Colorado; Colorado State University; the University of Colorado; Colorado State University-Pueblo; Colorado School of Mines; Metropolitan State College of Denver; and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

  •  The 9/11 remembrance run/walk, “America Goes the Distance,” will be Sunday at Pioneer Park, 9101 Ralston Road, in Arvada. Registration opens at 7 a.m.; runners and walkers start at 8 to 8:30 a.m. There will be music and fellowship after the race. All proceeds benefit Operation Restoration, a mental-health program for military/veterans and their families.
