Name: Wesley Woodyard
Height, weight, position: 6-0, 222, inside linebacker
The buzz: In a little over a year, Woodyard went from being an undrafted rookie out of the University of Kentucky to an NFL team captain. His teammates selected him as one of seven team captains, likely for his play on special teams, as well as his life-of-the-party personality. Woodyard (pronounced Wood-yard) made eight solo tackles in the preseason.
Looking ahead: Woodyard, who started six games in 2008 when D.J. Williams got hurt, isn’t a starter now but will see plenty of playing time alongside Williams in nickel packages when starters Andra Davis and Mario Haggan leave the field. He is also one of the team’s premier special teams players. Woodyard has recovered from a knee injury that slowed him in the offseason — he shed his brace for good about two weeks ago.
Did you know? Woodyard is one of the team’s most prolific Tweeters. Woodyard sends updates to his Twitter account (@LaGrangeRover16) from his Mac laptop from inside the Broncos’ locker room. In one message sent after the captain elections earlier this week, Woodyard wrote “Thanks to God and my teammates. I promise I got you “
