Kain Colter’s season apparently isn’t over. Cherry Creek’s senior quarterback suffered a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder last week in the opener, but that didn’t prevent him from playing Friday against Eaglecrest.
Creek used the Stanford-bound Colter as a receiver and running back, and he scored a touchdown each way in the fourth quarter. But it wasn’t enough for Class 5A’s fifth-ranked Bruins, who lost 21-19.
Colter, who lined up as a quarterback and ran the option when Creek employed its wildcat formation, scored on a 16-yard reception from sophomore QB replacement Wes Taber to cut deficit to 21-13. Colter added a 3-yard TD run with about two minutes left. He was stopped short on a two-point conversion run, but a facemask penalty gave the Bruins a second chance. Eaglecrest snuffed a reverse to hold on for just its second win ever over Creek.
Heritage 43, Denver South 18.
The Eagles, ranked No. 4 in Class 4A, rebounded from their season-opening loss to 5A power Columbine with an impressive offensive display. Mitch Griebel hit 14-of-24 passes for 242 yards and three TDs, all of them to Shane Opitz (seven catches, 154 yards). Josh Meyers rushed 19 times for 147 yards and three TDs.
Berthoud 54, Fort Lupton 0.
Ranked No. 10 in Class 3A, Berthoud bounced back from a season-opening loss and had two players rush for more than 100 yards. Kent Flynn ran for 110 yards and two TDs, and Greg Glasser added 101 yards and three scores.
Wheat Ridge 42, Golden 7.
Kyle Mews continued to prove he is a capable replacement for the departed Parker Orms, rushing for 130 yards on 17 carries while producing three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving). Mews has rushed for 275 on 36 carries in the Farmers’ first two games, both wins. Quarterback Charlie Land again was efficient for the defending Class 4A champs, tossing for three TDs.
Burlington 27, Wray 7.
In a mammoth 1A nonleague game, Burlington continued to validate its No. 4 ranking by thumping the No. 7 Eagles. The Cougars fell behind 7-0 early when Wray’s Brett Vlasin busted free for a 63-yard TD run, but Burlington countered with a TD apiece by four different players.
John Mall 35, Center 12.
It had been almost two years since John Mall won a game. The pasting of Center was the Panthers’ first win since Oct. 12, 2007, when they beat Las Animas 17-14.
Rye 42, Centauri 0.
The Thunderbolts registered their second consecutive shutout. Rye recorded five shutouts, including four in a row, last season en route to the 1A semifinals.
Doherty 37, Palmer 33.
Palmer quarterback Andre Brown came back to reality one week after his 419-yard, six-touchdown passing effort. Brown completed 11-of-17 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in the second half, but the Terrors’ comeback bid rally came up short. Doherty’s Jaden Terry had touchdown runs of 36, 31, 15 and 40 yards. Terry finished with 169 yards on 11 carries.
