More than 50 Kansas law-enforcement officers were sweeping a wooded area about 15 miles southeast of Junction City, Kan., on Friday looking for a suspect in an Aurora homicide.
Undersheriff Carlos Roman of Geary County, Kan., said a Kansas Bureau of Investigation SWAT team from Topeka, along with the Kansas Highway Patrol and Geary County sheriff’s deputies, are hunting the man wanted in connection with the death of a man found Thursday morning in an East Colfax Avenue motel.
Roman said the search began about 2:30 a.m. Friday when a Geary County sheriff’s deputy chased a car along a county road.
After a 10-mile pursuit, the car crashed and the lone occupant fled the car barefoot into the wooded area, Roman said.
Deputies soon discovered the driver was being sought by Colorado authorities. Manpower was beefed up and helicopters and two canine units were brought in to aid the search.
The body that led to the manhunt was found in the Carriage Motel Inn, 9201 E. Colfax Ave.
Min Kim, the hotel manager, said two white men checked in Wednesday night.
The man found Thursday morning by cleaning staff was black. He apparently died of trauma to his upper torso.
The suspect being sought by Kansas authorities is identified as 23-year-old Jesse Dennis Dimmick.
He is wanted in Louisiana and North Carolina in addition to Colorado, officials said.
Aurora authorities said Friday afternoon they are extremely concerned for the welfare of a second man, Shayne Michael Miller, 35, who they believe rented the motel room where the body was found.
