Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has tapped Roxane White, his former Human Services manager, to serve as his new chief of staff.

White begins her new job Sept. 24 amid trying times: The city faces a $120 million budget shortfall over the next 16 months.

City Council President Michael Hancock hailed the appointment, which was announced Friday.

“I think she will do an excellent job,” Hancock said. “She’ll hit the ground running and the mayor needed someone with experience to do that.”

White succeeds Kelly Brough, who was named last month as president and chief executive of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce.

“Roxane is a rare leader who has both the vision and the skills to get things done,” Hickenlooper said. “Her passion to help people at all levels will help us keep building this great city.”

White is now the executive director of the Timothy and Bernadette Marquez Foundation, where she is responsible for developing strategic giving in the areas of health care, education and human services.

She served as Human Services chief from 2003 to 2008.
