Aurora’s Roger Gunderson advanced past the first round of match play at the USGA Senior Amateur on Monday, eliminating North Carolina’s Norman Swenson at Beverly Country Club course in Chicago.

Gunderson, a former Colorado Golf Association senior stroke-play and match-play champion, earned a 4-and-3 victory over Swenson. Gunderson advanced to today’s second round, where he will meet John Grace of Fort Worth, Texas.

John Olive of Colorado Springs lost to Wisconsin’s Mark Bemowski 3 and 2 in the first round.

Eaton reaches second round.

Greeley’s Kim Eaton continued her run through the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur at the Cascades Course Homestead in Hot Springs, Va., with a 2-and-1 victory over England’s Susan Dye in the first round of match play.

Eaton meets Pennsylvania’s Carol Semple Thompson in the second round today.

Durango’s Cindy Bryniarski lost 6 and 4 to Rebecca Montgelas of Connecticut in the first round.

Wyoming’s Black in second.

University of Wyoming golfer Molly Black carded a career-low 68 in the second round of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins to jump into second place.

Black’s two-round 139 is tied with Colorado State’s Kasey Claussen. They trail Louisville’s Laura Anderson by one shot. In the team standings, Colorado State is two shots behind leader Idaho.

Coloradans stock cycling team.

USA Cycling named its 22-member team for the UCI Road World Championships starting Sept. 23 in Mendrisio, Switzerland.

The team features a large Colorado contingent.

Durango’s Tom Danielson is on the men’s elite road race and time trial team. He will be joined by Boulder’s Tom Zirbel for the time trial. On the road are Boulder’s Andrew Bajadali and Tim Duggan.

On the under-23 men’s team are Superior’s Tejay Van Garderen and Boulder’s Peter Stetina, Alex Howes and Kirk Carlsen.
