MEXICO CITY — Mexicans begin celebrating their Independence Day, Diez y Seis de Septiembre, today, but memories of unprecedented violence a year ago will make for a somber affair in some areas.

Some children’s parades and outdoor parties have been canceled. Security is tight.

In 2008 in Morelia, Michoacan, assailants tossed grenades into the crowded plaza. Eight people were killed, and more than 100 wounded.

Three men arrested and now awaiting sentencing were said by authorities to be from a drug cartel.
