Clint Barmes knows the stats but insists he has not adjusted his approach. He entered Wednesday with 12 home runs since the all-star break but only a .184 average. Barmes showed more patience against Matt Cain, doubling home a run in the fourth inning. Said Barmes, “This is when you want to be out there helping the team.”

Carlos Gonzalez, the only Rockies player to appear in all 16 games in September, stole his seventh base this month. Gonzalez has 16 this season.

Helton slumping.

Todd Helton had just one hit on the road trip but had better swings Wednesday. Barry Zito on Tuesday became only the third pitcher — Darren Dreifort and Dontrelle Willis are the others — to strike out Helton three times in the same game.
