Kendall Monasmith and Jourdan Hottinger each topped 100 yards rushing Friday as Akron, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, outlasted fourth-ranked Burlington 24-21 for the Rams’ 42nd straight victory.

Akron (3-0) never trailed against Burlington (2-1) but led just 17-14 at halftime. Hottinger (159 yards, 19 carries) made it 24-14 in the third quarter with his second touchdown run, a 3-yarder.

Brock Rhoades scored his second rushing touchdown to pull Burlington within 24-21 in the third quarter. Monasmith finished with 112 yards on 10 carries.

“They’re a very good team,” said Akron coach Brian Christensen. “It was a dogfight.”

Ironically, the Rams will go for their 43rd straight win next week against No. 2 Limon, which holds the state record for consecutive victories at 50 and ended Akron’s 38-game winning streak in 2003.

Legacy 20, Rocky Mountain 14.

Legacy’s Kip Smith, who set a much-debated state field-goal record earlier this season with a 67-yard free kick off of a tee, drilled two traditional field goals, including a 51-yarder. Frank Duran proved the Lightning still has a pass rush despite the departure of Nick Kasa to the University of Colorado, registering four sacks for the Lightning, which scored the final 13 points. Running back Colton Chavez ground out 78 yards and a touchdown for Legacy.

Greeley West 48, Fossil Ridge 18.

Steffan Bunting made big plays on offense and special teams as the Spartans, No. 1 in Class 4A, rolled in a Northern Conference game in Fort Collins. Bunting rushed for 218 yards and four TDs and blocked a punt that led to another score. The Spartans (3-0, 2-0) led 20-10 at halftime but scored 21 unanswered points on the SabreCats (1-2, 1-1).

Overland 54, Arapahoe 28.

With Cherry Creek slumping after losing quarterback Kain Colter to injury, Overland is emerging as a third threat to Centennial League stalwarts Mullen and Grandview. Behind Michael Hall’s 357-yard, five-touchdown rushing performance, the Trailblazers improved to 3-0 (2-0 Centennial). Hall scored four of his team’s five first-half touchdowns on runs of 77, 4, 41 and 55 yards to a 35-0 lead. He answered with an 80-yarder in the fourth quarter after Arapahoe (0-3, 0-2) cut the deficit to 35-10.

D’Evelyn 41, Englewood 0.

Senior linebacker Josiah Flack gets all the notoriety for D’Evelyn with his punishing hits and his double-digit tackle performances, but it was younger brother Caleb Flack in the spotlight against the Pirates. The younger Flack threw three first-quarter touchdowns, including an 85-yarder to Mark Neely. He also connected with Jared Mapes and Connor Davis for red-zone scores.

Kent Denver 47, Bishop Machebeuf 0.

Sun Devils running back Tyler Jackson finished with 201 yards on 14 carries, including a 94-yard touchdown, in the nonleague win. Jackson also scored another rushing TD and returned a punt 75 yards for a score.
