FIRESTONE, Colo.—Firestone police say children were likely responsible for setting off a small improvised bomb that exploded in an athletic field near a middle school.
Firestone Police Chief David Montgomery says no one was injured but an officer was taken to a local hospital as a precaution after becoming nauseated because of the fumes.
Montgomery says the bomb went off at about 4:30 a.m. and woke up neighbors near Coal Ridge Middle School but there was minimal damage to the area. Montgomery says the explosive was made from cleaning materials.
A bomb squad also found two other undetonated bombs in the athletic field, as well as similar devices around the neighborhood.
Montgomery says he hopes to identify the suspects by Monday and that criminal charges are possible.
