EMPIRE, Colo.—State highway and Clear Creek fire crews are cleaning up the crash of a tanker that spilled about 4,000 gallons of fuel and closed Berthoud Pass for several hours.
Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Mindy Crane says the tanker crashed shortly after noon Monday about four miles from the summit in the central-Colorado mountains. She says the driver had minor injuries.
The driver’s name hasn’t been released.
The pass was reopened shortly before 10 p.m. Monday. It wasn’t clear if weather, which was cold and snowy, was a factor in the accident.
About half the tanker’s 8,200 gallons of fuel spilled. The Colorado State Patrol and hazardous materials responded to the crash.
